Thirteenth Rule Challenge

The 13th rule in "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan is "Shop the Peripheries of the Supermarket and Stay Out of the Middle." Throughout he book, he emphasizes to eat Food, not food-like substances. Myself and a few others were challenged to go to the grocery store and find three foods from within the isles of the store. Pictured below, are the items and their ingredients list that I found.
(Whole Almonds, Natural Raisins, and Oats)

  1. Love it! A single ingredient for each product. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on how nutritious these products Any indication if these are genetically modified foods? Where were they produced (I'm guessing CA for at least 2 of the 3), and does that enter into your dining equation?

    1. I know that almonds are known to be really good for you. For a nut, they're not loaded with sodium and they provide a lot of good (unsaturated) fats, potassium, fiber, and protein. Raisins however, I'm not sure. Raisins are dried grapes, so I guess that would still make them a fruit(?). Personally, I wouldn't think they're that good for you. Looking at their label, they're a good source of carbohydrate and fiber, but have an huge amount of sugar. Raisins almost taste like candy to me - more than they do their younger self, the grape. Finally, oats are a good source of fiber and carbs. Nothing about it really stands out to me that indicates a strong negative about the product. Granted, there are many types of flavored and added oats products that are high in sugar and sodium - which are probably processed and not nearly as healthy for you as the original. Indeed, at least two of these three products came from CA (as it would appear) which means they had a ways to travel before ending up at the Gaffney Walmart prior to my visit. Sealed nuts, fruit (?), and oats don't seem to have any sort of preservatives in them. For almonds, it would be their skin and structure. But the other two are protected by their packages seal. So I feel confident that these items would still be adequately fresh for my uses with them although they have taken a certain period of time to come from other locations across the United States.
